Nature of Work
Employees in this classification are responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students attending Jefferson County public schools. School Bus Drivers are responsible for conducting pre-trip inspections and running established routes each school day, morning and afternoon. Behavioral monitoring and referral of problematic situations to appropriate parties is required and the ability to interact in a professional and tactful manner with students, teachers, and parents is essential. The position requires a CDL Class B with P/S endorsements, D.O.T. Physical Card, and Tennessee Department of Safety Training Card, and employee must be age 25 or older.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Conduct pre-trip inspections prior to running established pick-up and delivery routes.
- Transport students in a safe manner to and from designated pick-up and delivery sites or destinations.
- Report any needed repairs or observations regarding vehicle performance to mechanics and/or garage foreman.
- Maintain behavior sheets on students and report inappropriate behavior to supervisors, principals, teachers, and parents as necessary.
- Report unsafe road decisions in the event of road construction or bad weather.
- Assign students to specific seats to avoid problems and confrontations.
- Inspect the bus upon completion of assigned routes to insure no students remain and collect lost items.
- Maintain daily check lists.
- Perform related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program; ability to control and maintain discipline among students; maintain accurate records and documentations; communicate effectively with the public; or any equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the following knowledge, ability and skills:
- Thorough knowledge of Tennessee Department of Transportation rules and regulations pertaining to the pick-up and delivery of school age children.
- Thorough knowledge of Tennessee Department of Transportation rules and regulation regarding right of way, signage, railroad crossings, etc.
- Knowledge of Jefferson County Board of Education policies regarding student interaction, behavior, and discipline.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance repair and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of required first aide equipment and basic first aid procedures.
- Ability to exert authority and maintain discipline with students while transporting them to and from schools.
- Ability to maintain check lists and other documentation as required.
- Ability to interact in a professional and tactful manner with parents, students, teachers, and the public.
- Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job (sitting, large and small motor skills, vision and hearing testing).
- Skill in the operation of public school buses up to 90 passenger capacity.
Necessary Special Requirements
- Must maintain a valid Tennessee CDL class B with PS endorsements driver’s license.
- Must maintain a current D.O.T. physical card.
- Must maintain a current Tennessee Department of Safety Training Card.
- Must be age 25 or older.
