Job Description
$13.25 per hour; Full-time; 6.5 hours per day; 188 paid days per school year (includes 5 paid holidays); pro-rated if hired during the school year.
The school location may vary each year depending on student enrollment numbers.
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classroom Assistant Job Description
Nature of Work
Employees in this classification assist elementary, middle school and high school teachers by working with English language learners in the classroom. English language learners (ELL) are students who speak a language other than or in addition to English and are in the process of acquiring the English language through ESL services. Daily activities vary depending on the age of the students and the English proficiency level of the students. Activities associated with the job include working with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning objectives, assisting with classwork/homework completion, reading text/assignments aloud, preparing materials for classroom lessons, and monitoring the performance and behavior of students in classroom setting. Assistants must be capable of providing effective instruction to elementary, middle school and high school aged children and maintain a high level of energy while interacting with students. Assistants need to have excellent communication skills-reading, writing, and speaking.
Illustrative Examples of Work
-Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning objectives
-Read text or assignments aloud to individuals or small groups
-Instruct individuals or small groups to meet goals set in Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
-Assist teacher in academic or language instruction for ELLs according to WIDA and TN content standards
-Provides supplemental instruction to ELLs under the direction of a classroom /ESL teacher
-Tutor ELLs under direction of a certified teacher
-Assist with WIDA ACCESS assessment administration
-Utilize Ellevation Education to update goals/document instructional services provided to ELLs
-Facilitate orientation/enrollment of new ESL students
-Participate in required in-service activities for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing work related skills
-Performs other related work as required
-Speaking a language other than English is NOT a requirement
Necessary Requirements of Work
Minimum education requirement is 48 college credit hours (semester) or passing score on the Parapro assessment. Additional course work in education, experience providing instruction to elementary or middle school students, ability to successfully interact with students, teachers, parents, and co-workers, strong organizational skills or any equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the following critical knowledge, skills and abilities:
-Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, teachers, and co-workers
-Ability to maintain order and discipline with small groups of children
-Ability to develop lesson plans and supplemental learning activities for individual students or small groups
-Ability to take feedback and directions from ESL and classroom teachers
-Ability to administer tests
-Ability to organize personal time and activities to meet multiple job demands and work assignments
-Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job
-Knowledge of basic educational and learning curriculum for elementary/middle school age children according to established educational attainment standards
-Knowledge of state and federal guidelines for interacting with children attending public schools
-Willingness to travel between schools if needed
